It is the start of 2019 and everyone is setting their goals for the year ahead. Like exercise and sticking to a healthy diet, a good skincare regime is all about establishing a good daily routine. Our skincare experts have shared their tips for ensuring your skin is beautifully conditioned, no matter what your age or skin type.
1. Ditch Face Wipes
The first and easiest way to improve your skincare is to establish a good cleansing routine to help rid skin of impurities, dirt and grime that have built up during the day.
First of all, ditch the face wipes. They may be quick and easy to use, but they do little to effectively remove pollutants or dirt. And worse, they are extremely bad for the environment as they block drains, introduce plastic to the food chain and won’t break down in landfill for centuries. They are a skincare short cut, but one which isn’t good for your skin or the environment.
Instead invest in a multi-use makeup remover cloth, like the WipeOut MicroFibre Cleansing Cloth. These super-soft cloths use only warm water to remove even the toughest of makeup, are perfect for sensitive skin and eyes and can be used up to 1000 times. Plus they are just £8 each!
2. Cleanse Daily
Cleansing with a facial cleansing brush removes 60% more dirt than when using your fingers and can be used with your favourite cleanser. The BareFaced 2 Cleansing and Toning Brush wobbles dirt from your pores, leaving your skin blemish-free, deeply conditioned and glowing, with results from the first use. It is suitable for even the most sensitive skin. For skin more prone to breakouts or anyone new to cleansing brushes, First Step is a good introductory brush.
3. Use A Good Face Mask
Once a week treat your skin to a good face mask. Clay based masks are a great option for oily skin types that are prone to breakouts. Other ingredients that can be helpful include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, tea tree oil, retinol and niacinamide, which all help to balance and condition your skin.
For dry skin, look for a mask containing hyaluronic acid. It works wonders for hydrating dry skin and plumping out fine lines and wrinkles in ageing skin.
Where serums and face oils dominate the skincare conversation, let's not forget the importance of the humble moisturiser. Moisturiser is the key to locking in all the products you have used before. Hyaluronic acid, in particular, only works effectively if locked in with a good moisturizer. Even during the winter months remember to moisturise your whole body in order to protect your skin and keep it healthy.
Water is the most essential ingredient for healthy, beautiful skin, so make sure you drink plenty of fluids. A diet rich in omega-3 and omega-6 oils can also boost your skin's inner hydrating functions and lead to healthier looking, younger skin.
For Feet, a foot cream or layer of Vaseline under cotton socks overnight works wonders for keeping skin soft. If you suffer from hard skin, the Well Heeled Express Pedicure System makes a huge difference by gently buffing away rough skin quickly and effectively and saving you money on regular in salon pedicures!
5. Wear Sunscreen
Sunscreen should be worn throughout the year and should be broad-spectrum offering protection against UVA and UVB with an SPF of at least 15. Regular sunscreen use will help prevent against the development of skin cancer and premature ageing.
